Kianga and Mt Mulligan Memorials

Half a century apart, but on nearly the same date, Queensland experienced two coal mine disasters which had a significant and long lasting impact on the communities at Kianga and Mount Mulligan.

In 1921 at Mount Mulligan 75 men were killed in an explosion - a quarter of the entire population of the town. Read more about Mt Mulligan.

Fifty four years later, 13 were killed at Kianga, also in an explosion. Read more about Kianga.

Over the weekend, commemorative services were held for both. We will never forget the human cost of coal, and we reaffirm our commitment to put safety first and foremost.
